Vision Statement
Charleston's Bridge is working to create a vision of Justice and Love that is so powerful that it will override the forces of hatred, injustice and fear. Domestic and Sexual Violence have such a far reaching effect that it is impossible to extricate them from other areas of equality and community. The culmination of generations of dis-empowerment, the failure of a justice system that has for too long not provided for equal protection under the law, and a culture that has too often turned a blind-eye to the struggles and tragedies that befall those who are marginalized has resulted in thousands and thousands of women and children who are lost within a legal and social system that is not working for them.
Citing statistics and illuminating the disparity between the promises of our social contracts and the reality of the world in which we live only goes so far -- action is required to get to the Better World we endeavor for.
"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love." And, as Jesus said, "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
Charleston's Bridge Inc was built by a small group of friends and family members of Marianna Bailey. Marianna came to us with this idea to be the change we want to see in the world. No one should be criminalized for protecting themselves or their children from abuse of any kind. Due to the breaks in the chain of justice families are torn apart, mothers are without their children and children are without their mothers. Someone had to do something and Marianna felt it was put upon her to at least start somewhere. All fund raising sites prohibit raising money for violent crimes but asking local community means exposing a very personal, extremely heart breaking view into their lives. Often women who deal with these kind of problems do not come from places where money is just being handed out. More often than not women in this situation come from poverty. Domestic abuse of all kinds jump drastically in lower income areas. Charleston's Bridge offers a platform for women in prison to share their story, raise awareness and funds for legal representation to write the wrongs in the broken system. Our dream goal is to provide support for basic needs to the women in prison. Basic hygiene items shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, are not provided to women in prison. Shorts, T shirts, amble bras and panties are not provided either. Often the families on the outside can not afford to care for the women's children and support the cost of prison. Naturally the women put themselves on the back burner so their children can be better taken care of. However most importantly, Charleston's Bridge dreams of offering free legal representation to criminalized victims so they can get back home to whats important, their children and families.
